We’re incredibly proud that Life on Our Planet was the most-watched natural history series on Netflix in 2023, topping the chart in 79 countries. Our 8-part series narrated by Morgan Freeman, and created in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, tells the story how life on Earth unfolded
Since it’s release, Life on Our Planet has accumulated over 130m viewing hours on the streaming service with nearly 19m accounts viewing – making it the most viewed natural history show of the whole year despite only being released globally on 25 October. This is followed by our 4-part series Our Planet II narrated by Sir David Attenborough, which followed the phenomenally successful Our Planet series, unravelling the mystery of how and why animals migrate.
Our aspiration with Life on Our Planet was to create a natural history series unlike any other – combining spectacular natural history with ground-breaking VFX, and new scientific research, to bring the world’s greatest story to viewers around the world. It follows the dramatic journey of life through the cataclysmic mass extinction events that shaped our planet – and the surprising rise and fall of species along the way. From the early microbes and plankton, to T-Rex and terror birds, to us, humans.
Life on Our Planet couples a celebration of the natural world with a challenge to viewers to protect it. Keith Scholey, Executive Producer says: “By understanding our past, we can help shape our future. The sixth mass extinction that we’re currently living through is the first one created by an animal and also the first one that can be averted completely. The story of life is full of chaos where you never know what’s going to happen. Yet there’s one consistent thing: Life always finds a way.” It’s a powerful reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life on Earth.
The latest ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report‘ – the twice yearly comprehensive report of what people watched on Netflix over a six month period – was released on May 23rd.
