Episode 4
Winter
Ending his year of hidden wildlife, Hamza heads to the frozen peaks of the Cairngorms to find two pure white animals – ptarmigan and mountain hare. Not an easy task when everything around him is white. On the west coast, wild boar have returned to the forest but spotting them is going to take a lot of help. It’s time to call in air support!
The Caledonian forest is the only UK home for a charming bird Hamza has never seen before. With the help of his best friend, he heads into the woods to try and spot a crested tit. These woods are also home to the endangered red squirrel, so on a snowy morning, Hamza heads to the coldest place in the UK, to try and find this elusive arboreal acrobat.
Every winter, woodcock migrate to the UK to escape colder weather in Europe – but they only come out at night. Hamza uses a thermal camera to enter their world and gets an up close and personal experience with these strange birds.
To end his journey, Hamza heads to Sussex to capture a shot that very few people have ever seen – a wild tawny owl in its natural habitat.
Filming Feats:
- Wild boar – Cutting edge drone technology tracks down lost species deep in the remote Great Glens of the Scottish Highlands, Hamza sets out on a challenging expedition into ancient forest in search of Britain’s most elusive land mammal: the wild boar. With the expertise of ecologist Ben Harrower and a cutting-edge drone system, a vital aerial perspective offers the team a chance to see the boars from above and guide Hamza in, on the ground.
- Tawny owls – Two years ago, while filming Hamza: Strictly Birds of Prey, Hamza was treated to a breathtaking close-up fly-by from a tawny owl — made possible by his friend and owl expert, David Plummer.
