How We Filmed Bottom Trawling for Ocean with David Attenborough

Silverback Films has released a new behind-the-scenes film revealing how the team captured the world’s first cinematic footage of bottom trawling in action for Ocean with David Attenborough.

To expose one of the ocean’s most destructive hidden practices, filmmakers developed entirely new camera systems – deploying cameras inside fishing nets and across the seabed itself to document the devastation unfolding beneath the surface.

The sequence became one of the most talked-about moments in the film, helping bring the issue of bottom trawling into public, political and policy conversations around the world.

The exclusive new interview features Producer & Director Toby Nowlan, Field Producer Olly Scholey and Underwater Photographer Doug Anderson as they explain how the systems were designed, tested and deployed at sea – and the emotional impact of witnessing the destruction first-hand.

The behind-the-scenes feature also explores the wider purpose behind capturing the footage: to bring visibility to a practice rarely seen by the public, and ultimately to help drive change.
